Pool water balance calculator

Enter the pool volume and your water readings: chlorine or bromine, pH, alkalinity, hardness, cyanuric acid. The tool works out how much of each product to add to get back in range, in the order to apply them, and explains every dose.

Nothing leaves this page: it all runs in your browser, with no account.

The calculator

Your pool

The regulation applies to public and semi-public pools in Quebec. For a residential pool, common industry guidance is a useful reference.

An outdoor pool may use cyanuric acid (stabilizer); an indoor pool does not need it.

Bromine is mostly found in indoor pools and hot tubs. Chlorine includes chlorine gas, used in large installations.

Water volume

Length × width × average depth, in metres, × 1,000 gives the litres of a rectangular pool. 1 m³ = 1,000 litres.

Your water readings

All are optional: leave empty whatever you have not measured. Concentrations are in mg/L, also written ppm.

Together with free chlorine, it gives combined chlorine (chloramines).

Read with a DPD kit, in mg/L of bromine.

For the Langelier index (balance between scaling and corrosion).

Optional. Without a value, the calculation assumes 1,000 mg/L (fresh water). A salt-water pool has more.

Your products

Pick the ones you have on hand. Strength is the one on the label: correct it if yours differs.

Alkalinity is raised with sodium bicarbonate, pH with sodium carbonate and cyanuric acid with pure stabilizer.

Targets: change the range you aim for (optional)

Targets are pre-filled from the standards and pool type you chose. Change them if your pool, your supplier or your inspector asks for others. The minimum and maximum say when to correct; the target value is what you aim for when a correction is needed.

Parameter Min. Max. Target
Free chlorine (mg/L)
Total bromine (mg/L)
pH
Alkalinity (mg/L)
Hardness (mg/L)
Cyanuric acid (mg/L)
Langelier index

Cyanuric acid: leave the minimum empty for “no floor”; a maximum of 0 means “none” (indoor pool).

Your doses

Enter the volume and at least one reading, then press “Calculate doses”.

Estimate my pool’s volume

Pick the shape closest to your pool, then enter approximate dimensions: the estimate updates as you type.

Pool shape
Length mftin
Width mftin

Water depth

Shallow end mftin
Deep end (empty: same depth) mftin

Measure the depth of the water, not of the wall: the water level is lower than the rim. For a sloping floor, the average of the two depths is used.

This is an estimate, within 10 to 15% for irregular shapes. If your pool is new, the volume given by the manufacturer or builder is more reliable.

What the tool does

It compares your readings with the targets, then works out how much of each product brings every parameter back toward its target value, from the volume, the product strength and, for pH, carbonate chemistry. It follows an order: alkalinity, pH, hardness, stabilizer, then chlorine, because each step affects the next. If you enter the water temperature, it also works out the Langelier saturation index, which tells whether the water is scale-forming or corrosive.

Nothing leaves this page

The calculation happens in your browser. The volume, readings and targets you type are neither sent nor saved by this site, and there is no account to create.

Where the targets come from

The Quebec profile follows the Regulation respecting water quality in swimming pools and other artificial pools (s. 5): free chlorine 0.8 to 2.0 mg/L indoors and 0.8 to 3.0 outdoors, pH 7.2 to 7.8, alkalinity 60 to 150, hardness 150 to 400, total bromine 2.0 to 5.0, cyanuric acid at most 60 outdoors and prohibited indoors. The residential profile follows common industry guidance, which is not regulatory. You can replace any target.

Estimates, to be confirmed

Doses assume water at about 25 °C: the real dose also depends on temperature and on the age and purity of the products. Add in two goes and re-test. The tool does not cover salt water, PHMB, or ozone and ultraviolet systems on their own. The operator of a public pool remains responsible for meeting the regulation.

For the whole team

Track every expiry date, not just one.

Remanso keeps the qualifications register for all your staff and sends a reminder before each expiry date, so no certification spreadsheet to maintain by hand. The trial runs 21 days, no credit card.
