How long is the Bronze Cross valid?
According to the Société de sauvetage (the Lifesaving Society), the Bronze Cross is valid for 2 years when used as a work permit, and for life when used to register for the National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor courses.
Last verified: issuing body pages and Code de sécurité guide read on 19 October 2026.
The detail
Two uses, two terms: as a work permit, the issuing body’s page says 2 years; as a prerequisite for registering in the National Lifeguard and Lifesaving Instructor courses, it says valid for life.
To track an employee’s expiry, the use therefore decides: an employer that requires it as a work permit tracks it as a term of 24 months after it is obtained, according to Remanso’s reference.
The Bronze Cross is a prerequisite of the National Lifeguard: holding the Bronze Cross certification is listed among the prerequisites of the Pool option. At work, the guide to Québec’s Code de sécurité recognizes it as the certificate of an assistant pool lifeguard (s. 441); it does not replace the pool lifeguard certificate required of a lifeguard (s. 438: see the question on lifeguard certification renewal).
These terms are published by the Société de sauvetage, which may change them.
