How often must a lifeguard certification be renewed in Québec?
Every 2 years: Québec’s Code de sécurité (Chapter IX, s. 438) requires a pool lifeguard to hold a valid certificate, and the Société de sauvetage (the Lifesaving Society) sets the validity of the National Lifeguard pool option at 2 years.
Last verified: Code de sécurité and issuing body pages read on 19 October 2026.
The detail
Since July 17, 2025, Chapter IX, Bathing Sites, of Québec’s Code de sécurité (Safety Code) has replaced the Règlement sur la sécurité dans les bains publics (public baths safety regulation), which was repealed. Its section 438 requires a pool lifeguard to be at least 16 and to hold a valid pool lifeguard certificate issued by a competent body.
Chapter IX does not set how long certificates remain valid. According to the guide of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, written with the Société de sauvetage, a certificate is valid as long as the expiry date set by the issuing body has not passed.
The Société de sauvetage’s National Lifeguard — Pool option certification meets this requirement. The Société says it is valid for 2 years when used to work: its expiry is calculated, 24 months after it is obtained.
The Waterfront option follows the same 2-year cycle. For a beach, section 462 requires a valid beach lifeguard certificate.
